MINEX Russia Mining and Exploration Forum 2013

Mining industry is one of the most important sectors of the Russian economy. Mineral resources and mining companies represent a backbone that provides economic growth, creates jobs and stimulates infrastructure development in the major regions of the country. Russia ranks among the top ten countries in terms of mineral reserves, with highly-developed services industry and large-scale engineering production. According to experts, level of mining production in Russia is about 4 trillion rubles (approximately 125 billion USD). Russia does not only produce minerals for the domestic market, but is also the world's leading exporter. In the medium term, minerals will retain their export potential and will continue to be an important source of Russia’s budget funding. The Russian Government and the state subsoil policies are focused on boosting mineral exploration and implementation of sustainable use of known reserves. Further development of Russian mining industry will be determined by both internal and external factors.

It’s hard to find a mining company which has not been affected by the turmoil in the commodity and financial markets. Russian mining companies are not immune. To keep up with the macroeconomic pressure companies are actively reinventing their business to cope with the downturn.  The key objective of this process is to improve economic efficiency and provide basis for further sustainable development. Many Russian companies have survived through more than one global crisis. By sharing their knowledge and experiences mining companies can greatly improve their abilities for overcoming current problems and also for saving time and money by implementing “tried and tested” solutions and strategies.

Future development of the mining industry in Russia will also largely depend on the successful dealing with the internal factors and state policies. Until recently, the level of exploration activity in Russia was determined at the state level by the internal needs of the domestic industry (not exports). This policy resulted in the depletion of mineral reserves as previously state-funded exploration was stopped. The privatised companies have been unable to attract sufficient private capital to fund large scale exploration projects. As a result many mining companies are focusing on the development of the economically viable minefields discovered during the Soviet times while exploration of the new deposits is often put on hold “until better times”. Compared with other major mining countries, the number of junior companies operating in Russia is clearly not proportionate with the mineral potential of the country. A relatively small capitalisation of the Russian financial market and its inability to fund high-risk exploration projects often leaves Russian companies no alternative but to raise capital abroad. However, as virtually all of the world's financial markets are in a deep recession, access to the international capital for Russian companies is very limited.

In addition to the lack of finance for exploration projects, the key constraints for the mining industry in Russia are the existing legal framework, undeveloped geological information system and bureaucratic obstacles standing in the way of companies and investors.

MINEX Russia 2013 – The 9th International Mining and Exploration Forum will be held in Moscow from 1-3 October 2013 and will address ongoing problems and look into prospects for the development of the Russian mining industry in current macroeconomic and policy climate. The main theme of the Forum this year will be "Managing mines during the downturn". As always, the Forum will provide a powerful and diversified platform for the exchange of experiences and finding the best solutions for increasing efficiency and attracting investment to Russian mining sector. The Forum traditionally offers opportunities for organizing multiple business and investor meetings, important announcements, presentations of cutting edge technologies and forging international partnerships.  The Forum also offers platform for networking and meetings with government delegations, businesses and investors.

Since its inception in 2005, MINEX Forum plays active role in business matchmaking and stimulation of the exchange of innovative mining management practices.
