James is a Technical Director with over 24 years’ experience in the field of environmental management specialising in environmental risk management and corporate liability services to the mining & industrial sectors. Services include EHS compliance, international due diligence, ESIA, EP and IFC Performance Standards and gap analysis, risk management services and liability quantification. James has worked on project managing multidisciplinary mining projects in Canada, USA, Australia, Tasmania, Africa (including DRC and South Africa), Israel, Turkey, South America, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Georgia and Finland. This has included sectors involving coal, iron ore, potash, copper, zinc, diamonds, gold, silver, aluminium smelters, processing plants and transportation (rail and ports). Mining clients have included large corporates, mid tiers, governments and government agencies.
James has worked on sustainability reporting and CSR services with major multinational clients. Services have been provided to AIMS and f FTSE listed mining companies.

Managing relationships in local mining communities – why it matters

The presentation will cover the typical perspectives held by communities during the mining project. Techniques for understanding the socio-economics of the local community will be provided. In addition, a discussion on the developing requirements for community engagement practices will be provided together with a discussion on the commercial benefits of gaining a coherent 'social licence to operate.
